Shesh Besh
Shesh Besh is a game I remember from my early
childhood.
The game was very popular among men: Arabs and Jews new
immigrants from Arabic countries. Unlike its aristocratic
came from the edge of the new Israeli society with a strong
connotation to unemployment and working class.
I remember groups of players sitting in small dark cafe's situated
in small dark towns or poor and neglected neighborhoods in the
suburbs of Tel Aviv and in Arabic villages.
I remember the sound of the cube and the checkers knocking on
the board, the smoke of the cigarettes and the smell of the
coffee.
The elements included in my work are influenced by those
memories. Borders and fences situated and nailed to the board
in various positions, carob seeds and beans glued to the cover
of the box, symbolize Israel in the past and present referring to
the difficulties, intolerance, indifference and hatred between
people that live on the same "board", play the same games eat
the same food and share the same memories. |
