Karen Gillerman Harel & Studio MD Design Present Their Backgammon Board
Changing Perspectives
Backgammon Road Map
For Israel's 60's Independence Day
The work projects a tapestry of long-shots & close-ups while portraying tradition & modernity, body & sole, black & while, landscapes & lifescapes, and ultimately life itself.
The game introduces Karen & Studio MD's personal Road Map which includes family photos and images from Israel and abroad, while presenting images that create a narrative and curiosity.
Karen & Studio MD decided to maintain the actual game and create a further understanding of the Reality and outlook on life.
Both sides of the game gained another perspective, while the Checkers is presented by black & white identical images and the Backgammon presented by close-up & long-shot images which creates another game of spotting the detail taken from the whole image.
”I believe that Life is all about Timing and Luck, just like in the Backgammon Game" Says Karen

Karen Gillerman Harel:
Karen was born in 1970, Israel, married + 2.
Studied photography at Goldsmiths College -University of London and at The School of Visual Arts- New York. Her work was displayed in well-known New York galleries and in several exhibitions throughout the U.S. and Israel. Recently she has published her book: Love & Other Bad Habits, which consists of texts and photos about Women.
Her images employ a surprisingly neutral snapshot aesthetic, rendering the substance of everyday life into a series of intimate glimpses that she shares sympathetically with the viewer.
Through her images she draws attention to overlooked corners of life and love, people and landscapes and ultimately our conjoined intersubjective selves.
With her native country in turmoil and its people living in constant tension and conflict, Karen projects through her images, the optimism and beauty of her people, that shine through the darkness to bring light and hope to a country she loves and is very proud of.
